Winter weather hampering Texas' election day

Posted: Updated:

It's election day in Texas, but some areas of the state may have trouble casting their ballots.

It isn't much of an issue for us in the panhandle here Tuesday, but the Texas Secretary of State is advising county election officials to extend polling hours and combine voting locations in case of bad weather.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm advisory for much of the state Tuesday morning and some schools are planning to open late.

The Secretary of State is the top election official,  and sent a memo to county election official on how to deal with potential difficulties. Each county will make its own decisions on how to handle voting and weather conditions.

Travis County was the first county to announce polling delayed until 11 Tuesday morning. Election officials are hoping this will not be a big impact on the primary election voting.

Voting hours are being suggested to be extended if polls do open late, to still give people the same amount of time to go out and vote.
