Veterans bill showdown in Senate

Washington DC - A democratic bill enhancing health care and other benefits for veterans is facing an uphill battle as the Senate approaches a showdown vote on the $21 billion legislation.

Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, is blocking a vote on a Republican alternative that would eliminate some of the improvements and impose sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program.

GOP senators are expected to rally behind a procedural move Thursday that would derail the veterans bill. Each party says the other is playing politics with the veterans legislation, all because of the Iran sanctions.

Some things the bill would include are make many veterans without service-connected injuries eligible for treatment at VA medical facilities, more veterans would be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities, and some benefits for spouses of deceased veterans would improve under the bill.
