Problem pipes, common in Panhandle

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) - Leaks or pipes that burst are not unusual in the Panhandle.

In fact it happens to about one in every four homes.

Houses in our area are prone to severe pipe damage, which could end up costing you thousands of dollars in repairs.

But, the good news is, preventing further damage to your home is relatively simple.

It takes just about an hour. But, the results could be the difference between buying or selling your home.

"It will usually turn a buyer away from a home if there are leaks or plumbing problems," said Real Estate Agent Mirna Fewell.

It can also save you from draining your wallet.

"You don't want to be a new homeowner and have thousands of dollars of repairs before you get into the house," BJ Tijerina with Scottco said.

To prevent bursting pipes in your home, plumbers and real estate agents suggest a hydrostatic test.

The easiest way I explain it to somebody is, your house is a bucket. We are filling your bucket up, if there is a crack in your bucket, obviously the water level is going to drop," Tijerina told us.

A hydrostatic test usually lasts about an hour, and costs around $300 for a full test.

Companies like Scottco, will look over the pipes under your home, using a balloon fed through the clean-out pipe, to make sure there are no cracks or leaks.

We learned homes in the Puckett, Belmar and Sleepy Hollow neighborhoods, have the most incidents of pipe problems.

But don't let that fool you.

Experts say the soil we live on is so dry and always shifting, which can create issues for any home, in any area.
