Health care sign ups and Texas

Posted: Updated:

As the deadline approaches for enrollment in the Affordable Care Act, the number of those enrolling in the lone star state is growing.

After a slow start in Texas, insurance sign up under the Affordable Care Act seems to be growing this month as deadlines hit for those needing coverage now.

According to records about 14,000 Texans enrolled for insurance coverage in October and November on the federal exchange website. Officials expect a rush on the website over the weekend and Monday to enroll for immediate coverage.

Open enrollment will continue however through March. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas has told the Dallas Morning News that the company has added 500 customer-assistance representatives this month to handle a flood in calls.

December enrollment numbers won't be released officially until early January.

The last report by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services tallied more than 364,000 individuals who had completed the application process and picked a plan nationwide.
