Oklahoma looking to ban e-cigarettes for youth

Posted: Updated:

Oklahoma - E-cigarettes are now the target of lawmakers when it comes to our youth.

Two Oklahoma lawmakers are wanting to prevent teens from using e-cigarettes with legislation they plan to file next year. Sen. Frank Simpson and Rep. Pat Ownbey want to expand the definition of tobacco that would include all nicotine delivery products.

A large number of youth are trying e-cigarettes according to the Oklahoma Youth Tobacco Survey. There is currently no law in the state that prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes and vapor products to minors, but state law restricts access to other tobacco products.

Oklahoma isn't the only state looking at this type of legislation. Cities like Albuquerque and Los Angeles have proposed bans on e-cigarettes.

The Oklahoma State Health commissioner was in favor of this bill, saying more research is needed on long term effects of these products as a way to protect the health of the state's residents.
