Man accused in hatchet attack in Valencia County

RIO COMMUNITIES, N.M. (AP) - Police say a man attacked his girlfriend and her mother with a hatchet after he broke into his girlfriend's home in the Valencia County town of Rio Communities.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Tony Lynn says 24-year-old James Hutchens was arrested after breaking into the home on Saturday morning.

Lynn says Lynn's girlfriend was treated by medical professionals and should be released later Sunday, while her mother is in critical condition.

There was no phone listing for Hutchens, and it's unclear whether he has a lawyer.

He was booked on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and kidnapping.
