"Together We Can" Holiday Food Drive

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - While many of us are still stuffed from our Thanksgiving feasts, hundreds of families in our area are struggling to put food on the table.

Once again NewsChannel 10 is teaming up with the High Plains Food Bank for the annual "Together We Can" Holiday Food Drive, and organizers say it's imperative that the food bank reach their goal of 500,000 meals this year.

The food drive came up short of that same goal last year, but the demand is just as high now as it's ever been despite the improving economy. "You know we've seen a 52 percent increase from 2008 to 2010, and we haven't seen that number go down since then. You know, people are saying the economy's back and it might look good on wall street, but what we're seeing here on the ground is people are still struggling to put food on their table," Broc Carter, High Plains Food Bank said.

Carter says it's the rural communities of the panhandle that are hurting most.

You can drop off non-perishable food items, or personal hygiene items off all week long starting Monday at the United Market Street parking lot. But if you can't make it out to donate in person this week, you can also donate cash at any United Store across the panhandle, or online.
