Local WWII veteran celebrates 65 years of marriage

Amarillo, TX - A local World War II veteran has something extra to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

Thursday afternoon 89-year-old Amilio Fuentes celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary with his wife, Beatriz. The entire Fuentes family gathered today at the Big Texan to celebrate their marriage.

Amilio is the only living survivor from the ship he worked on during WWII where he spent two years fighting in the Pacific Islands on the U.S.S. Ammen.

Amilio said during Thanksgiving he often thinks about the friends from the war who died, but is thankful he was able to survive and spend 65 years with his wife.

"I don't know how to thank God for all of that," said Amilio. "And just especially today, when we've been married 65 years and then on Thanksgiving! What better Thanksgiving can you have?"

He said the secret to making it work all these years is the ingredient of love. "I don't think I could survive if she dies before I do," said Amilio. "I don't know what I would do. That's the kind of love we have."

He said marrying Beatriz was the best thing to ever happen to him.
