AMARILLO - The City of Amarillo says now is the time to select a new city logo.
After a failed attempt at presenting the City with a new logo earlier this month, it's now up to the public to decide what they want to see in a logo.
What originally started out as just an idea proposed to the City by the Globe News, has grown into a competition that gives the community a chance at leaving their mark on Amarillo. "The response has been overwhelming," said Brandon Huges with the Globe News. "Really just getting the public involved, all the way from professional graphic artists to local junior high art classes have submitted some really good quality work," he told us.
In just about a week over 600 new designs were submitted. Now the voting process will begin. Starting on Wednesday, you can log on to amarillo.com and see all those submissions.
There are two categories which consist of a parody and proper design that you can vote for through December 2nd. "We'll take the top vote-getters and start Wednesday December 4th," Huges said about the second round of voting.
After that, on December 10th, those top designs will be presented to the City. Although the City hasn't officially come right out to say they are abandoning their first design, it's pretty clear, they are trying to move forward with a new logo. "Well that logo is still there. But I don't think there is any chance of us using it with this. I hope we come up with something amazing out of this," Mayor Paul Harpole said.
Before a new logo is selected, the Mayor says it will go through the proper legal process and pass through a panel of graphic art students from Amarillo College and WT, before a final decision is made. "There just planning different things to make sure everything is done right on this logo," he said.
The City has not yet said when they plan on revealing the new logo, but the winner will receive a cash award from the Globe News.
