Salvation Army charity drives give back to our community

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Many people may have donated to the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Drive or adopted children off their Angel Tree .

As the holidays get closer, more and more people will begin donating to the Salvation Army and today we set out, to find out just where the donations go.

You have heard the bells....seen the kettles and maybe even adopted a child off the Salvation Army's Angel Tree, but in the end who does all this benefit?

It benefits people right here in Amarillo like Rochelle Rojas.

"I was on that receiving end, you know just the way your kids' light up, you know you're stressed, you're worried you know, not knowing what your kids are going to wake-up to that morning," Rochelle Rojas, Recipient and now Volunteer for the Salvation Army said.

Rojas now works for the Salvation Army and helps with the Angel Tree and is able to bring joy to other families in need.

"I have been on the Angel Tree in the past and so I do know what it's like on the receiving end of that, now I'm learning what it's like on the opposite end you know, just watching all the people that, that help that are concerned about our community, kids that are less fortunate so that's really touching you know," Rojas said.

While they raised about $250,000 last year, the money raised during the holiday drives benefit the community throughout the year.

"It helps us do winter relief, for instance pay rent for families that are having a difficult time, or utilities or to help with the things they might need for family prescriptions and just those items to keep the family stabilized, so those funds stay here in our community to help make a difference," Corps Officer of the Salvation Army Major Harvey Johnson said.

The Salvation Army's holiday drives have already kicked off and will run throughout the holiday season.
