Hereford Regional SportsPlex begins construction

HEREFORD, TX - A new indoor sport complex in Hereford begins construction Tuesday.

Hereford City Officials, the Economic Development Corporation and KidsInc Amarillo have been working together to turn this idea into a reality for the community.

The Hereford Regional SportsPlex will hold a large soccer field and four smaller courts that can be used for volleyball and flag football.

Land for the project was donated by the City of Hereford and money for construction has come from private donors. So far $2.1 million has been collected. Developers hope to have a total of $2.4 million, for the whole project.

"It won't just be for Hereford, it will be for the surrounding communities. Dimmitt, Vega, Bovina. We actually think we will have players from Clovis and Muleshoe," said complex director Armando Guerrero.

The 28,000 square foot facility was designed in partnership with KidsInc Amarillo.

"There is a big demand for people over there. Not only just the youth but even the employees of some of the companies over there that travel to Amarillo to play in our facility that I'm sure would like to be able to stay at home in that region," KidsInc President Jimmy R. Lackey said.

Developers say there is also potential for outdoor expansion.

"Phase 2 and phase 3 will move to outdoor soccer, baseball, softball, walking trails and things like that," Guerrero told us.

Project organizers hope the facility will be open in May.
