Catalytic converter thefts on the rise in Pampa

Posted: Updated:

Pampa, TX - The Pampa Police Department said it is seeing a spree of catalytic converter thefts.

Mechanics say it only takes a couple minutes to saw off catalytic converters underneath cars. For thieves, the two-minute job can result in a $200 gain, which is the going rate for selling used converters.

Police believe thieves are selling the stolen parts to scrap metal yards. However, most scrap metal yards say they are on to the scheme.

"We've taken the approach on catalytic converters that we're just not going to accept them," said Joel Morgan of Texas Pipe and Metal Company. "It's just not worth the liability and the risk to our company by buying property that's not legitimate. We just don't do it."

Despite his strict policy, Morgan said two to three people a month still try to sell the part to his company.

In the past two weeks alone, police said 14 converter thefts have been reported. The used part is only worth a couple hundred dollars, but to fix the damage after the part has been stolen can reach close to a thousand.

Pampa Crime Stoppers is offering a $400 reward for any information that leads to an arrest for the thefts.
