Amarillo College starts new financial planning center

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - Many students graduating college are not fiscally prepared for the future.

So, Amarillo College is opening a new Student Money Management Center to help students manage their money in college and beyond.

Study for tests, study for exams, do homework, get financial planning advice? The last one may not be something the average college student has on their to do list.

But at Amarillo College they are trying to change that with their new Student Money Management Center. They hope to teach students how to plan for their financial futures.

"We want to teach them how to learn to do budgeting, manage their credit, be aware that when they take out those student loans those are forever, they don't ever go away you have to pay them off," said Lisa Bentley, Coordinator of the Student Money Management Center at Amarillo College.

Bentley tells us this resource is important as fiscal responsibility is not taught in high schools like it once was.

"Now with the curriculum they are required to take in high school, you don't have time for the soft skills that actually make you successful in life," said Bentley.

The Senior Vice President of Amarillo National Bank agrees and has this advice for students about to enter the workforce.

"First of all get as much financial education as you can, learn how to budget and save. Pay yourself first, you know set aside a certain amount of money from your paycheck every single time you get paid and put it in a savings account," said John T. McElyea, Senior Vice President of Amarillo National Bank.

Amarillo College hopes to expand the programs available in the Student Money Management Center as it becomes more established.
