PORTALES - After recovering from a salmonella outbreak that temporarily closed the plant last year, Sunland Inc. peanut processing plant has filed for bankruptcy.
The plant is no longer in operation and its 90 employees are out of a job.
Sunland recalled all of it's products almost a year ago following a salmonella outbreak and the FDA required the plant stay closed until the plant made renovations and upgraded food safety procedures.
The plant opened back up in May of this year, but couldn't recover from the financial blow it took while closed.
The bankruptcy court will appoint a trustee who will take possession of the company's property and equipment, and will make the decision of what happens to the plant and all of its assets.
