Traffic diverted off I-40 east bound lanes near Helium Road after major wreck

Amarillo, TX - Traffic was diverted off of I-40 east bound lanes near Helium Road after a major wreck involving two semis late Wednesday afternoon.

Several lanes on I-40 in both directions were closed around 3:00 - just west of Amarillo.

One wreck involving three cars occurred near I-40 eastbound, just before the Soncy exit. That caused traffic to slow on the highway. It was then that one slowed semi was hit from behind by another semi-truck. The front end of the second semi was completely smashed, injuring both the driver and one passenger. Both the driver and passenger of that semi were taken to the hospital, one was airlifted by Lifestar.

Wreckers were called to the scene to tow both of the trucks, but it was several hours before they could clear the scene because one of the semis was transporting nacho cheese at the time of the wreck. Any time food is involved in an accident, the health department is required to come out and inspect it before the accident is cleaned up.

No other injuries were reported. DPS continued to divert traffic onto the access roads in that area, backed up traffic on the east bound access road until about 10:00 Wednesday night.
