Benefit programs and the government shutdown

Benefit programs and the government shutdown

Those who receive government benefits may have something to worry about.

The majority of benefits won't be affected unless the shutdown is prolonged over several weeks, but those who will, or have recently applied for government benefits can expect to see an impact now.

Those receiving Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, or SNAP can expect payments to be distributed as normal. But, others could face a cancellation.

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs says they have funds available for disability and pensions through October. But new benefits claims can expect a delay because of the shut down they will not continue overtime for claims processors.

Other programs like disability, HUD, and WIC are all facing the same issues. Once current funding runs out in the case of a prolonged shutdown, payments in these programs will be suspended.
