Agriculture Commissioner hopefuls focus on water issues

Posted: Updated:

Several candidates are vying for the Agriculture Commissioner seat in Texas.

The position will have a major role in several key issues facing the state. One of three republican candidates, Uvalde Mayor J Allen Carnes, stopped by our NewsChannel 10 studios.

One main concern for the agriculture industry is funding for water projects. If voters approve a $2 billion proposal, 10 percent would go toward rural communities; something candidates say is a start but not enough to meet our needs.

"We have to realize a lot of what Texas has been and a lot of what it will be in the future comes from rural Texas. A lot of the goods and services that people in downtown Houston, downtown Dallas...what they look for actually comes from rural Texas. A lot of our energy independence we have in the state and a lot of our food and fiber source," says J Allen Carnes, Agriculture Commissioner hopeful.

Texas has the country's largest rural population at nearly 4 million. The state leads the nation in cattle ranching and production of cotton and wool.
