UPDATE: Major train collision east of Amarillo, 4 to hospital

UPDATE: 

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are en route to Amarillo to investigate the cause of Wednesday's early morning train crash.

Officials with NTSB tell NewsChannel 10 the investigators are being sent from their offices in Washington D.C. and California. They're expected to arrive in Amarillo sometime Wednesday evening.

The condition of the two BNSF employees that were originally reported to have suffered critical injuries in the crash have been upgraded to non-critical condition. All four injured employees are now expected to be evaluated and released from the hospital by Wednesday night. 


 

Amarillo, TX - Authorities are investigating the cause of a major train collision east of Amarillo.

It happened just after 4 o'clock Wednesday morning.

The Texas Department of Transportation says three BNSF trains collided near highway 60 and FM 1912, near the Tyson plant.

An eastbound train was reportedly stopped on the tracks when it was rear-ended by another eastbound train.

A few seconds later a westbound train hit the wreckage.

Four people were transported to the hospital; two reportedly in critical condition and the other two in non-critical condition. 

The Potter County Sheriff's Office, Amarillo and Potter County Fire Departments are all on scene along with BNSF officials.

At least one engine with diesel fuel is on its side but Amarillo Emergency Management says there are no hazardous materials posing a threat.

Xcel Energy has cut electricity to downed power lines that fell on top of the rail cars. 

Highland Park Independent School District and the Tyson plant remain open.

Drivers are urged to remain cautious because traffic in the area remains heavy.
