A Clovis man is in custody after police say he was caught carrying loaded weapons near a middle school campus. NewsChannel 10 has been investigating this story since we first broke it to you Thursday on Live at Five.

It all started just after noon, when Clovis police responded to the area of 14th Street and Sycamore on reports of a man carrying weapons near Yucca Middle School. Officers found a man matching the description, later determined to be 23-year-old Andrew Chavez Junior, who ran from the officers. He dumped his backpack by a nearby apartment complex and detectives later recovered it. They found the fully loaded AR-15 assault rifle and a loaded Walther 9mm pistol.

Yucca Middle School and Parkview Elementary School were placed on lock down for a short time as officers combed the area. Police told NewsChannel 10 off camera there was never any direct threat to either school and Chavez never made any attempt to enter either school. Police said Chavez was actually fleeing the scene of a burglary he has just committed on a nearby residence, which is where he obtained the weapons.

NewsChannel 10 also spoke with residents of the nearby apartment complex police combed through in search of Chavez. Many said it was scary not really knowing what was going on, but seeing swarms of cop cars circling through the area and even witnessing several officers running through the area with their own weapons out.

Police found Chavez hiding behind bushes on the east side of the old radio station on Sycamore street. Along with an active warrant for Battery on a Police Officer, authorities said Chavez was carrying a small amount of marijuana. He was taken into custody without any further incident and booked into the Curry County Jail.

Clovis police are still investigating this incident.
