Police Report: Clovis man arrested near Clovis school with stolen AR-15 Rifle and 9mm pistol

Incident Type: Man Seen Carrying AR-15 Rifle In Backpack Near Yucca Middle School Arrested Near Hillcrest Park Entrance 

Clovis – September 19, 2013 – On Thursday, September 19, 2013, at approximately 12:08 PM, the Clovis Police Department responded to the area of 14th Street and Sycamore on a report of a man wearing blue shorts and a striped shirt running south from the grounds of Yucca Middle School with an AR-15 Rifle in a backpack.

Upon arriving on the scene, officers located a man matching the description who began running from officers south on Walnut Street from the apartments at 12th and Walnut/Sycamore Street area. The man had dumped the backpack in a covey area outside the apartments. This was pointed out to officers by people on scene at the apartments and the backpack was recovered by Detectives. Among other items, a fully loaded .223 Caliber AR-15 Rifle and a loaded Walther P99 9mm pistol were found in the backpack the man had dumped.

Clovis Police Officers flooded the area. Two officers located the man matching the description hiding behind bushes located on the east side of the old radio station at 10th and Sycamore Street.

He was taken into custody without any further incident. He was not armed when captured, but was found to be in possession of Marijuana in one of his pockets. The man was identified as 23 year-old Andrew J. Chavez JR of Clovis. Chavez had an active arrest warrant for Battery on a Police Officer and was an absconder from the NM Department of Corrections Probation/Parole Department. Yucca Middle School and Parkview Elementary School were placed on lockdown for a short time while Clovis Police Officers searched for the suspect in the area. Clovis Police were present at the two schools during the lockdown. 

Investigation so far has revealed Chavez had just stolen the black backpack and firearms from a home burglary he had committed on Kingston Avenue, just a few blocks away from Yucca Middle School. The case is still under investigation. Andrew Chavez was transported to the Curry County Adult Detention Center for booking.

    Around 3 p.m. Saturday, a man was pronounced dead after a wreck involving two motorcycles. Police say two men were traveling south on the Canyon E-way near the Hillside exit when one of the motorcycles stuck the back of a Toyota Camry. One male killed and the other motorcycle driver was taken to the hospital. Both the driver and the passenger in the Toyota were also taken to the hospital with minor injures.
