Area Red Cross volunteers to assist in Colorado

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - Two area residents are making the trip to Colorado to join the massive relief effort.

Stanley Kretzmeier left Monday afternoon and Mary Lou Farnum will be following Tuesday Morning. Both are local Red Cross volunteers who have been deployed to assist those evacuated from their homes by the devastating flash flooding. They are being sent to assist with relief operations and to bring care to thousands of people at the boulder airport reception center.

More than 250 Red Cross volunteers from across the country have been called upon, and more from our area are expected to join efforts in the coming weeks.

We spoke with Kretzmeier before his flight took off, and he said he is expecting there to be an overwhelming amount of people in need, but he's ready to do all that he can to help.

"What I'm looking forward to doing when I get there is to remind them that they're not alone, that we're here to help, and we can't do everything, but we are going to try and be sure that we hook them up with what we can do," Kretzmeier said.

Kretzmeier will be working in a health service capacity. This will be his eighth time deploying after a major natural disaster.

If you'd like to help those effected by the Colorado flooding, donations can be made by texting "RED CROSS" to 90999.
