TTU and poison center collect old and unused medications

The Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy and the Texas Panhandle Poison Control center spent Saturday helping area residents clean out their medicine cabinets.

The groups teamed up for their regular medication clean out. Saturday, folks dropped off any old or unused medications at the pharmacy school so they could be disposed of properly. Organizers say despite the several medication clean outs they host each year, they still saw a high turnout today.

"That was kind of surprising to me, the amount of people that participate in the mediation clean out has gone up," Kenna Payne one of the event coordinators. "I thought it would go down as more people got rid of their medications, but it's gone up. We have anywhere from 250 to 650 participants depending on where it's at and the time of year."

In the 25 previous cleanout events, the poison center has collected more than 12,000 pounds of unused medications.

Construction is underway on Canyon's new aquatic park, which is still on schedule to open to the public on June 1st. The aquatic park is just a bunch of holes in the ground right now. But when the slides go up (by April 10th), people will start to see how close the project is to completion.
