Labor Day travel expected to bring business to Amarillo

Amarillo, Texas - Labor Day holiday travel is expected to be at a new high with a five percent increase from last year according to AAA.

More than 85 percent of Americans who were traveling over the three day weekend are expected to do so by car. With Amarillo having access to two interstate highways, the panhandle is prime to bring in more business from those passing through.

"I actually picked Amarillo to stop in. Typically I do this route, I would stop in Oklahoma City, and St. Louis, and the major cities. I decided to go a little shorter and switch it up this time," Karla Eldridge said.

Eldridge, who is making her way to Ohio this weekend, brought her business to Amarillo this time.

"I knew you had major hotels. So I stayed downtown off the highway," Eldridge said.

Amarillo is a prime spot for drivers to fill up their tanks, or rest for the night. Many say their planning on spending more than 100 dollars on gas alone.

"Yeah I would think so. I would think that there would be some tax revenue generated by the fuel sales and restaurant sales, food sales things like that," Brad Haralason, a Kansas traveler said.

AAA reports the average traveler is expected to go 594 miles round trip and spend $804. Amarillo will be seeing a big boost in sales over the Labor Day holiday, and travelers agree.

"Of course. It always does because there's jobs that need to be paid for, and stuff that needs to be bought. There's always that need where ever you stop," Bryan White, a Colorado traveler said.

The increase in travel this year is being associated to the a positive economic outlook and optimism in the housing market.

AAA also forecasts more than 2.5 million Texans will have hits the road over the weekend, an increase of more than four percent from last year.
