The Perryton Rangers opened their 2013 football season against a tough opponent, the Dumas Demons. Like every high school team in the state of Texas, the Rangers were encouraged by several bright spots in their first game and learned where improvements need to be made.

Both teams opened the contest with the usual opening night jitters before settling into their game plans. The first quarter was low scoring and the Rangers led 2-0 after the Demon offensive mis-fired a snap which led to a safety. Both offensives settled in and picked up the scoring in the second period. Perryton led by a score of 16-12 at halftime.

The Rangers remained in the lead and seemed to be in control for the majority of the game. The Demons never gave up and handed Perryton a heart-breaking loss with a last second field goal. As time ran out, the Demon kicker connected on a short field goal which gave Dumas the victory by a score of 29-28. Despite the loss, the Rangers were encouraged by several positive performances.

Senior Jake Whittenburg led the Ranger offensive with a total of 4 touchdowns. Whittenburg scored two rushing touchdowns and hauled in two receiving touchdowns. He totaled 148 rushing yards and 90 receiving yards in his impressive performance. With this one game production, Whittenburg scored 40% of the touchdowns he did last season (10). Another bright spot for the Rangers was the performance by junior quarterback Justin Ventura. He went 18-35 and threw for 219 yards with one interception.

It was a hard fought game for both team. The Rangers fall to 0-1 on the season and will be on the road next week to face the Bushland Falcons.
