New Methanol Plant may help boost Pampa economy

After three years of being closed, Celanese near Pampa is set to re-open as a methanol plant.

When the gates to the old Celanese plant reopen in 2014, the location will have a new purpose and will help bring life back to Pampa.

"Local businesses and companies are growing and expanding. We've had new businesses coming to Pampa, new companies... It's all really exciting," said Clay Rice, the Executive Director of Pampa's Economic Development Corporation.

Adding to that excitement is the development of a new methanol plant. G2X Energy based out of Houston started construction in January.

By June 2014, they expect the first phase of the plant to be up and running. The company is looking to fill 40 jobs once construction is complete, but with that, millions of dollars could be heading into the Pampa economy.

"There's about 150 or 155 million dollars of direct and indirect investment going into the economy," said Matt Whitaker, the Vice President of G2X Energy. "It's pretty substantial for the community," he added.

Rice says the construction and money from this project will help boost the local economy and contribute to the growth of the area.

"Added diversification, more jobs, good paying jobs, it's just something that the community loves to see any time we can have something like that occur here," Rice said.

Currently, there are over 300 construction jobs that have been created and filled to get the new methanol plant complete.
