Former Amarillo mayor to run for Potter County Judge

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - A well-known public figure in Amarillo may soon be returning to local government.

Potter County Judge Arthur Ware has held his position for almost 23 years, but now former mayor Debra McCartt has thrown her hat in the ring.

Even though candidates can't officially file until November, McCartt is already planning her own candidacy just two years after stepping down as mayor.

"I decided to go ahead and run for Potter County Judge because it's something that I have a heart for; to serve this community, and now especially this county of Potter County," says McCartt, "I had a great opportunity to work for the city of Amarillo and its citizens, and I am ready to step up and work for this county of Potter County."

McCartt served as Amarillo's mayor from 2005 until 2011, and served as a city commissioner for several years before that.

She's known Judge Ware since at least high school, and says her decision to run is not based on dissatisfaction with his performance; but rather, a passion for public service.

"I appreciate the things that he has done and put into place," says McCartt, "I very much respect and admire what he has done in the past, and I just look forward to getting involved with county government, understanding the process, and being a part of the decision-making for Potter County."

November 9th is when candidates can officially file, and we'll be following any further developments running up to the next election.
