New federal rules for truck drivers

Amarillo, TX -- New rules for truck drivers will save money and lives, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation - but many trucking companies aren't completely sold on the idea.

For a little over a week now, truck drivers have been held to tighter federal regulations designed to keep our roadways safer.  The DOT's new mandates require drivers to work no more than 70 hours a week, with at least 34 hours of downtime in between.

The Department says keeping tired drivers off the road will save lives, but industry advocates are pushing against the ruling, arguing that such an arbitrary standard will cost trucking companies - and ultimately consumers - in the long run, and won't make anyone any safer.

Drivers are required to keep logs of their driving hours and breaks, and violations could mean fines of up to $11,000 for companies, and $2,750 for individual drivers.

The new regulations were actually decided in December of 2011 and went into effect July 1st.
