Replica gun leads to fatal officer involved shooting

Posted: Updated:

An investigation shows that a replica pistol was used by a suspect in Sunday's officer involved shooting in Amarillo.

Police were called to the sixteen hundred block of South Jackson in Amarillo, early Sunday morning. When they arrived, the suspect, 35 year old, German Mata, pointed a gun at officers.

An investigation later found the gun Mata pointed was a realist replica firearm but, Sergeant Woodard who trains officers for these kinds of situations, says it's extremely hard to tell the difference between a real or replica firearm.

"It's impossible, especially in a low light situation and things like that. Some of the new replica guns they have out, you can't tell," he said. "Somebody pulls a gun, an officer only has a split second to react if it's a real gun or a fake gun and he's got to react and act like its a real viable threat."

Neighbors from the area told us Mata was a transit in the area. The officer involved in that shooting has been placed on administrative leave while the case is being investigated.
