Animal Control sees increase in lost pets on July 4th holiday

Posted: Updated:

The fourth and the fifth of July are the busiest days of the year for Animal Control. More pets run away on this holiday than any other.

"They have a very heightened sense of hearing and the fireworks are like bombs to them," said Shannon Barlow, Assistant Director of Animal Control in Amarillo. "They really really unnerve animals. From live stock animals to companion animals which are dogs and cats. Its really unfortunate."

While you may be out enjoying the fireworks, there is a good chance your pet may be frightened. "Animals don't know what to do. So they either look up or run in fear and they end up getting hit by cars or causing an accident. They can also cause animals that aren't normally aggressive to bite and snap because they're scared," Barlow said.

But, there are a few things you can do to help ease their nerves.
"Play some music for them or leave the TV on if you're going to be gone and you know your pet is afraid of the fireworks," said Jena McFall, from the Humane Society. "Just soothe them as much as you can. Don't just lock them in a crate and let them fend for themselves because they will get very very upset."

If your pet has run away, make sure you check with the Humane Society to see if they are there.
