Hundreds receive free dental care during Mission of Mercy

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of underserved patients in our area received professional dental care Saturday, without spending a dime of their own money.

It was day two of the Texas Mission of Mercy event at the Amarillo Civic Center. Some 80 volunteer dentists and other dental professionals gave up their own time and money to provide this free care to about 400 children and adults just Saturday. A first-come, first serve program that's been providing this free service in Texas for 12 years.

"I've done a lot of things in dentistry, but to me I get the most gratification, I feel the best about this stuff, to actually help someone who never gets a chance, and that's the way all these docs feel," said Richard Smith, Chairman of the Access Committee. "They all are here because they want to help somebody."

Mission of Mercy is sponsored by the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation. Since 2001, the group has treated more than 27,000 patients and provided more than $18 million worth of free dental care at Mission of Mercy events.
