HPV declines due to vaccine, but how protected are you?

Amarillo, Texas - We previously told you the number of young girls with HPV has dropped significantly since a vaccination was introduced.

The number of girls 14 to 19 years old with HPV has dropped to just more than five percent since the vaccine, Gardasil, was introduced. But local doctors tell us it isn't fully protecting you.

Studies do show the vaccine's effectiveness is 82 percent after just one dose of the three part shot. Amarillo OB/GYN, Brian Eades, says the vaccine is crucial in helping to prevent the top four types of HPV, but what it lacks is protection against every HPV strain.

"But what you find is it only covers the top four viruses, when there are 30 or 40 different viruses. So, while it suppresses those top four, now what we're beginning to see is a lot of others beginning to be on the rise, and so you can't let down the guard and we've got to come up with new vaccines to pick up some of the others," Eades says.

Dr. Eades says women should still take precautions to protect themselves from the other forms. He adds a new vaccine has been in the works but has yet to reach production.

Construction is underway on Canyon's new aquatic park, which is still on schedule to open to the public on June 1st. The aquatic park is just a bunch of holes in the ground right now. But when the slides go up (by April 10th), people will start to see how close the project is to completion.
