Apply for free voter ID card at DPS offices

Thousands of Texas residents who did not have access to voter ID cards may now get the opportunity.

This week the Department of Public Safety will begin processing applications for election identification certificates also known as voter ID cards.

The free ID's are in response to opponents who say a big portion of voters do not have access to them or money for them.

The new change is required by Senate Bill 14, a measure that actually passed back in 2011 but was on hold until Tuesday's decision.

The ID's are available to voters who do not have a viable form of ID yet.

Applicants must go to a DPS driver's license office to apply.

There are some requirements to qualify; you must be a U.S. citizen, a Texas resident, eligible to vote in Texas and be 17 years and 10 months or older.

Opponents say obtaining the free ID's will still be difficult for potential voters who live far from DPS offices, or who don't have money to purchase copies of their birth certificates if they don't already have the document.
