Skilled labor demand has Amarillo College creating new class

To help fill open skilled labor positions in our area a new course will be offered at Amarillo College.

"Most shops, they just don't have the applicants they used to have at one time and finding help these days is very very hard," said Eddie Casias, the Head Instructor of the Amarillo College Auto Body Program.

Starting in the fall, students will have the chance to take a nine month Auto Collision Certificate program. Casias says the hands on course will prepare students for the auto repair industry.

Gregg Brown, the Shop Foreman at Moss Auto Body in Amarillo, says vocational classes, like the one being offered at Amarillo College are very beneficial.

"They learn stuff in there they'll use the rest of their life and hopefully we will get some that do stay interested in it and continue on and we bring into the trade," Brown said.

He also said the demand for young workers is prevalent in his business and having a certificate would better the chances of that person getting hired.
