Pantex Plant increases safety efforts

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, Texas - The Pantex Plant in Amarillo has increased their safety efforts to better protect their employees and our community.

B&W Pantex officials say they've finished construction on a $35 million dollar project designed to make the plant more secure.

The construction included replacing 16,000 feet of main pipes and pumps, as well as having workers build more water-holding tanks.

Since the site carries special nuclear material, maintaining and upgrading aging equipment is essential in helping reduce the risk of a large explosion from occurring.

The effort was sparked after the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board reviewed the fire protection system at the Pantex Plant.

They became concerned with the number of deficiencies and failures found in recent years.

At the end of February, the safety board requested Pantex make changes to the system to ensure proper reliability and operability.
