Local STAAR test results

For many years there's been a big push to improve area students' performance in math and science, but now the concerns are in other subjects. STAAR exam results are raising those concerns.

Students in AISD schools did really well on their math, science and social studies exams, but did not do great in reading and writing.

Superintendent Rod Schroder says they're concerned because around 30% of students in grades 3 through 8 did not pass the reading and writing portion of the test.

They're currently trying to determine how many high school students have to retake exams because the results they received from the state include the students who retook the test.

They are currently working to separate those results. Schroder says, "They took last year's failures and as they retested, if they still had to test in May, they included those in the number. So you can't tell how many of our initial students who took the test initially this year, compared with the students who took the test initially last year."

Right now, teachers are discussing what material they emphasized last year to see what they need to change for next year.

The district says this is the first time they'll be able to get a hold of the tests and answer keys. This will help them go over the questions to see what concepts students are struggling with and adjust the curriculum next year accordingly.
