More than $2 million for community development

More than $2 million dollars of your taxpayer money is going toward Amarillo's community development, and the city wants your input.

A proposed budget was discussed Thursday to give people the opportunity to comment on how the money will be spent.

The city's community development department set up a budget considering funding for various projects and activities including building a new splash pad and security lighting for Eastridge park, tearing down abandoned burned buildings, and giving money to agencies which help disabled and elderly people.

The city says they have as many as 10 calls a day for assistance on emergency repairs which will be included in the funding as well.

Home Administrative Technician Michelle Martinez says, "There's some people that are in tears when they leave here. And they're just like thank you guys so much for what you do. Because if we didn't have you, we'd be living without gas, without water. And so yes, these are significant."

Amarillo's Community Development Department says most of the people on affordable housing, whom the funding would also assist, work jobs where they do not earn a wage they can live on.

The city says they want your input because it does shape the decision making process. You can submit your thoughts and comments to .
