Breastfeeding may reduce obesity risks

Posted: Updated:

Many doctors claim breastfeeding has numerous benefits, including one that may curb obesity.

The Centers for Disease Control says breastfeeding your child for nine months may reduce their odds of becoming obese by more than 30 percent.

Mariada George, an Amarillo Pediatrician, says breastfeeding is less expensive than formula and a good way to help your child develop.

"It's not the only thing you can do to keep your child from being obese," she said. "But it's a very cost effective thing to do to give your child a little push."

Doctors say other benefits of breastfeeding include lower risks of diabetes, asthma and ear infections in children.
