Summer lunch programs in Amarillo

Amarillo, Texas - The demand for summer lunch programs for area children is growing.

Many area children rely on lunch programs to keep hunger away during summer vacation, especially those not enrolled in summer school. Various area programs say they have been feeding more children over the years.

The High Plains Food Bank Kids Cafe has three locations in Amarillo where summer food programs are offered, including the Boys and Girls Club and North YMCA. Leigh Fuller with the food bank says more programs have approached them asking for assistance feeding children they see.

The Boys and Girls Club feeds 225 kids in it's summer program and currently has at least 100 so far on it's waiting list compared to 60 last year.

"Last year we saw 303 children over the summer. That's probably going to be the number this summer if not more. So, without them that would be 303 kids we'd have to worry about trying to find some nutritious meals for them every single day," Alise Craig, Program Director for the Maverick Boys and Girls Club says.

Children at the Maverick Club receive a Snack Pak on Fridays to keep them fed over the weekend. Amarillo Parks and Recreation also offers a summer lunch program and weekend Snack Paks.

Summer food programs are at the following locations starting next week and run through August 9th.
