Sen. John Cornyn hosts roundtable discussion in Amarillo

Amarillo, TX - In terms of sheer population, Texas is growing faster than any other state in the country, and that's good news for our economy.  But that growth isn't distributed equally across the state - which can present problems of its own.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, eight of the fifteen fastest-growing cities in the nation are in Texas - but more rural areas like those here in the panhandle sometimes fall by the wayside in Washington.

So this afternoon (May 30), U.S. Senator John Cornyn met with the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission to listen to our local leaders and take their concerns back to Capitol Hill.

The PRPC encompasses 26 counties in the Texas Panhandle, and serves as a steering committee for local governments.

"We share common interests, common economic factors, and common goals," says Spearman Mayor Brian Gillispie, who also chairs the PRPC.  "So if we as a people - as a group of people - can share that together, then I think we all stand a better chance of success."

Some of the main issues mentioned were water, energy, and transportation, with tax incentives suggested as a partial solution for some concerns.

Senator Cornyn says Texas is in a better position than most states due to its culture of independence.

"We are fortunate to live in Texas, because we're doing better than the rest of the country, and there's a reason for that," said Cornyn.  "It's because of strong leadership at the local level, because we don't necessarily depend on the federal government for our prosperity; we take the initiative here at home."

Cornyn said meetings like these are essential for maintaining state sovereignty in an age of expanding federal influence.
