Conversation with incoming AC Board of Regents member Johnny Mize

Posted: Updated:

Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo College Board of Regents saw some change of its own this year, with four contested positions.

NewsChannel 10's Jeff Stebbins spoke with the incoming regent at a watch party on election night, May 11th.

Here is a transcript of the interview:

JS: Emily, I'm here at the watch party for both AC Board of Regents and the AISD school bond.  with me here is Mr. Johnny Mize, who is running for one of the open positions on the AC Board of Regents, and Mr. Mize - what spurred you to run; what motivated you to run for this position?"

Mize: "First of all, I had individuals - local community leaders that asked me to consider running, and I think a lot of the Amarillo College institution, and I think they're doing a terrific job, and I wanted to try to lend my business experience to that board."

JS: "Okay, so for you, it's less about change than it is maintaining a current functioning system."

Mize: "Yeah, Amarillo College is doing a great job; I believe there are a lot of things we don't want to change. I think the real issue from my perspective is the rising cost of education is going to continue to really impact all of us, and we have to figure out how we do that in the most economical fashion, and that's really where my business experience, I hope, we can be able to apply some of that to lend that to the board."

JS: "Are there any particular changes you'd like to see to the way AC operates?"

Mize: "Not offhand. Truthfully, as I've been in and actually had some sessions with the deans, and understood a lot about what they're doing, along with Dr. Matney, and Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart, and I'm very impressed with what they are doing, so I don't want to mess that up, first of all, so I don't think there's a lot I would want to change. Really I just want to be there to encourage and empower and really grow that culture being really driven by student success. I think that's a key component to what Amarillo College is about right now, and I couldn't agree with it more."
