Local man dies in burn unit after wreck

The Amarillo truck driver with critical burns from a fiery crash near Sunray passed away Thursday morning.

37 year-old Ezequiel Garcia had been in a Lubbock Burn Unit since the March 10th wreck that also killed five area teens.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says Garcia struck the teens' car on the passenger side after they had run a stop sign on Morton Elevator Road.

DPS says Garcia nor the teens were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Owen Asher says he knew Garcia for several years. He says his friends called him Zeke, and that he loved his wife and kids, worked hard, and liked playing softball. Zeke helped him get his CDL license.

Asher says they worked at Coca Cola and Pepsi together as route drivers. He says, "He was feeling a lot of pain and nobody wants to be that way, but it's just the fact that you know we're all still in shock. Because he's just that kind of guy you just can't miss yet. That friend you can't really see it until. I guess we actually see it on the funeral. "

Another friend Elva Cervantes says, "I knew Zeke for about four years, he was my coworker there at Pepsi, and he was a very kind-hearted man. Always talked about his family, very hard worker, and he was the type of man that would take his shirt off his back for you."

Cervantes says she went with other friends of Zeke Thursday to put up a cross at the site where the wreck happened.

Attached is the full report of the crash from DPS.
