Suicide rates on a rise

Suicide is now responsible for killing more Americans than car accidents according to a new report released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Texas, suicide rates have increased 25 percent over 10 years and its a trend that has health officials worried.

Typically teens and the elderly have the highest rates of suicide, but the rate of those aged 35 to 64 has increased nearly 50 percent.

Local counselors and clinical directors say there are many aspects that factor into someone's decision to commit suicide; depression, the economy, the job market and money along with daily pressures are just a few things. Common symptoms include, seclusion and isolation, talking about suicide and an increase in drug or alcohol use.

If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, you can call the national 24-hour suicide crisis number at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
