Amarillo community celebrates Cinco de Mayo with colorful parade

Posted: Updated:

Saturday may have only been the fourth of May, but hundreds of people in Amarillo took to the streets Saturday morning to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May.

Starting at Alamo Park, various groups in Amarillo walked in this morning's Cinco de Mayo parade. The holiday, officially celebrated Sunday, celebrates the Mexican army's win at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, not Mexico's Independence Day, which it's commonly confused with. Parade-goers said it's a great way to celebrate their Mexican heritage and pride.

"We're thankful that we're able to celebrate also and for all of us to be together," said one parade-goer. "They can come with us and see what the whole neighborhood and what the Amarillo barrio is about."

Mexico's Independence Day is actually celebrated on September 16th each year.
