Mission Amarillo raises funds through 'Walk a Mile in My Shoes'

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of folks in Amarillo stepped out Saturday morning to reach out to those in need in our community, during Mission Amarillo's Second Annual "Walk a Mile in My Shoes".

Nearly 250 people walked Saturday morning in the annual fundraiser. The money raised will benefit Mission Amarillo, a group that works through the church to reach out to those in need through a housing outreach, a "shoe closet" and other ministry projects. Signs were spread throughout the walking course to teach walkers about poverty in Amarillo.

"A lot of kids in the Amarillo area, one thing they don't understand, there's actually a context of poverty in Amarillo," said Jeff Parsons, Director of Mission Amarillo. "As people are doing the walk right now, they are reading statistics. There are signs out with statistics that talk about some of the issues of poverty in Amarillo."

Last year, Walk a Mile in My Shoes raised more than $11,000 for Mission Amarillo. This year, with more walkers, they hoped to raise even more than that.
