Grass fire near Canadian River burns 150 acres

Posted: Updated:

Investigators are working to determine the cause of a weekend grass fire that burns 150 acres north of Amarillo.

The call for that fire came in shortly before four o'clock Sunday afternoon and by 4:45 p.m. all Potter County fire officials were asked to respond. All off-roaders were asked to clear out of the area while crews fought the blaze.

No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened by the fire. Officials tell NewsChannel 10 it was about 90 percent contained by about 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening.  But because of where the fire was located, crews couldn't get to it in the fire trucks. In fact, one got stuck in the sand, forcing them to fill large barrels full of water to haul out to the fire using ATV's.

"It's when we go west of the river, west of the bridge especially our trucks have a hard time because it's so sandy," said Pat Fitzgerald, Assistant Fire Chief for Potter County Fire and Rescue. "So we use the four-wheelers to transport people back and we'll work the fire by hand back there."
