Thousands march at Thompson Park for 'March for Babies'

Helping give hope to babies born too soon or sick was the mission of thousands of people from around the area Saturday.

Since 1970, March of Dimes has been organizing the March for Babies, a fundraiser to raise money for programs that helps moms have healthy, full term pregnancies and help fund research for medical problems in newborns. Some 3,000 folks in our area turned out to support the walk Saturday, a huge show of support organizers say is classic of the Panhandle people.

"The Texas Panhandle has really big hearts, everyone in Texas is jealous of the Amarillo division," said Vicki Brooks, Executive Director for the March for Dimes. "We all 26 counties in the Panhandle, and its just big hearts."

Last year, the March for Babies walk raised around $400,000, but this year, they're hoping for about $100,000 more than that. Brooks said she believes they'll raise about $500,000 to support their cause.

Construction is underway on Canyon's new aquatic park, which is still on schedule to open to the public on June 1st. The aquatic park is just a bunch of holes in the ground right now. But when the slides go up (by April 10th), people will start to see how close the project is to completion.
