Area middle schoolers compete in Electric Battery Car Race

Posted: Updated:

Local middle schoolers had the chance to put their engineering and building skills to the test Saturday at the annual B&W Pantex Electric Battery Car Race.

Each team was given a car building kit months ago and since has been working to build their own car powered by renewable energy. The races are a part of the National Science Bowl and are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Saturday, a record 29 teams of young car builders raced each others creations down a 20 meter track.

"It gives them something to do and it expands their knowledge of the sciences, plus working with a team it also expands their social skills too because they have to learn how to work with their team members and how to schedule things to get them done."

The team from Bonvina Jr. High School won the overall competition. Each was also judged for best car design, craftsmanship, creativity and most appealing design.
