New outlook for 2013 wheat crop

Posted: Updated:

Cold temperatures and high winds had experts worried about the health of this years wheat crop. But, initial assessments may be better than expected.

Wheat is used in many of the products we buy at the grocery store. Therefore, where there is a bad wheat harvest, price in the store typically increase.

Initially experts were predicting that freezing temperatures in the area were going to cause severe damage to this season's wheat. However, the ongoing drought forced many local farmers to plant their crop later than normal.

We were able to survey wheat fields with experts on Thursday and learned because the crop was planted later, the wheat is still in it's early developmental stages and can better withstand cold temperatures and high winds.

As a result, wheat plants are in better shape than expected and consumers won't see a drastic increase in prices at the grocery store.

Although there is a potential for grocery prices to go up, there is no need to worry just yet.

Experts from AgriLife Extension told us even if wheat prices were to double, the price for a loaf of bread would most likely not increase enough for consumers to notice.
