Amarillo volunteers help clean up Thompson Lake

Several Amarillo community volunteer groups spent some time Saturday morning participating in the Thompson Lake Clean Up project, organized by the Amarillo Zoo.

From nine to noon, various community groups organized a clean up of the shoreline around the parks lakes and creeks to help beautify the park for both visitors and the wildlife. Organizers said it's a good way to get the community to get involved while showing them that you can make a global impact just by starting small in your own community.

"We like to have people come out and teach them that they don't have to help the environment just one day a year, they can do it anytime," said Amarillo Zoo Educator Haley Wilde. "This is one way we can kick start people starting their own environmental practices. Earth day is in April so we kind of like to collaborate with that and get people involved."

The largest volunteer group out helping clean up Saturday was a group from the Amarillo High National Honor Society, consisting of 18 students.
