WARD COUNTY - Two men are dead following a well blowout near Barstow.
The Ward County Sheriff's Office tells NewsWest 9 that around 9 a.m. Friday morning they received a call about the blowout east of Barstow on an Anadarko Petroleum lease.
Officials on the scene determined that a pulling unit belonging to Basic Energy Services was in the process of rigging up on the well when the well blew out. The explosion blew the crew off the well head.
Juan Rios was pronounced dead at the scene and Olegario Rios was airlifted to the hospital where he later died.
Two other men, Roman Galindo and Jose Cruz, were airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock.
The well has since been shut in by crews on location.
The cause of the incident is being investigated by OSHA.
